Anglia Ruskin win three trophies at BUCS National Cup Finals

ARU won three BUCS National Cup finals with men’s volleyball, women’s volleyball and women’s basketball all bringing back trophies from the event hosted at Nottingham Trent University.

Men’s volleyball went into the final against Coventry University full of confidence looking to retain the BUCS Midlands Cup. They got off to a quick start against winning the first set 25-18.

Experienced setter Enrico Picone controlled the game well avoiding the competitive blocks put up by the Coventry team. ARU’s confidence grew as the opposition started to feel the pressure from a very consistent display went to take the next two sets and become BUCS Champions for the second time in three years.

The women’s volleyball team, who are currently undefeated so far, followed with their final against home side, Nottingham Trent University.

Some early nerves were settled with setter Morgan Little controlling the game well to win 25-20. Nottingham fought back well putting the ARU team under real pressure and took the second set.

ARU responded well winning the third set comfortably and fans (including Ruskin the Rhino) started to relax only for the ARU team to go 11-2 down in the fourth set but some fine serving from the ARU team got them back into the set.

ARU saved set points to get back to 24-24 before scholar Agne Vaiciulyte produced some great serves to allow ARU to win 28-26. A fantastic season carries on for the whole Volleyball team as they look to win the league.

After the double success of the volleyball team, women’s basketball took on Warwick University looking to defend their unbeaten record.

ARU started fast in a quick paced game and went 19-12 up after the first quarter. ARU looking the stronger team remained ahead at half time and going into the final quarter but could never pull away by more than 10 points to make it comfortable for the watching fans. Excellent defence from Izabel Halasz, and consistent scoring from Jazmin Gyulai and Sofia Koutsourelaki meant ARU won 77-65.

This started the final celebrations of the day with all three teams able to join in with ARU winning three cup finals. A day that will live long in the memory to all who were able to witness such excellent sporting performances from ARU.
